Taylor whistled as he cleaned the counter of the bar, the rag sticking momentarily on each ring of of alcohol left by the glass that had occupied it the night before. Hearing the door open, he looked up to see Natalie entering the room.
"Hey you," she cooed kissing his mouth.
"Mmm..." he mumbled. "Well, hello to you too!"
He smiled, looking into her eyes. It was times like these that reminded him just exactly why he'd married her - she loved him and she showed it.
"Don't you ever stop cleaning?" she pouted.
"Do you want bugs?" he replied. She smiled.
Not long after their marriage, Taylor and Natalie had become parents. At the time, Taylor had indeed worried that they were too young, and he had little faith in his parenting skills. However, when Ezra was born, he couldn't spend a minute away from him. Ezra and Natalie followed Taylor and his brothers on their three final tours before all three boys pulled out of the business agreeing that they'd all needed a break for a long time.
In searching for a new form of income that would not separate his family, Taylor had discovered that The Blue Rose Cafe was for sale. Remeniscing about times past when he and his brothers had played in the lot of the bar, he decided he'd found just the thing. Natalie had been thrilled that they didn't have to leave Tulsa and stood behind her husband's decision one hundred and ten percent. The owner had been more than happy to sell to Taylor. 'One-third of Tulsa's pride and joy,' as he'd referred to him.
Here they were, still in The Blue Rose, still in love, ten years later. Taylor hardly felt thirty four. When he was with Natalie, everyday felt like their first day. Though they'd had three more children - the twins Grace Zoe and Anabella Diana who were twelve and Zachary Clarke who was nine, along with Ez who was now fourteen - they still hadn't a care in the world.
All four children had inherited their father's love of music and both parents' stunning appearances. Zoe and Zac had Taylor's crystal blue eyes and their mother's straight brown hair, while brown-eyed Ana and green-eyed Ezra both had blonde hair. Taylor couldn't imagine his life being anymore amazing.
Recently, upon the kids' request, he'd arranged for his children's first meeting with his old Mercury execs to begin their studio work. He couldn't have been more proud when his children had finally begun their recording. He couldn't help but laugh everytime they'd been running late for the studio and he'd hear his wife shouting at Ezra who was the trouble-maker.
"Jordan Ezra!" Taylor would cringe as he remembered that tone from his childhood.
My wife is amazing, my children are amazing...my life is amazing.
Two years later...
Tears streamed down Taylor's face as he stood side-stage watching his children at the first show of their first tour.
"This song," Ezra began, "is a song my father and uncles wrote and performed for my great grandmother when she died."
More tears came as Zoe played the first notes on the keyboard. Taylor began to sing along.
If I'm gone when you wake up,
please don't cry.
And if I'm gone when you wake up,
it's not goodbye.
Don't look back on this time as a time of heartbreak and distress.
Remember me, remember me,
'Cause I'll be with you in your dreams..."
The song ended and Taylor watched his children wipe their eyes and move on in the set. He looked up to the sky.
"They did it, Nat," he sighed.
His life was amazing... before her cancer.
